I have just upgraded my HDX X18 1101EA to Win 7 using the HP upgrade pack.
I am having constant problems where the graphics driver keeps crashing - the video hardware in my machine is an Nvidia GeForce 9600 M GT. The screen goes black, then I get the desktop back with a message saying that the system has recovered, quoting the version number of the Nvidia driver. I have loaded the latest driver from the Nvidia site, but the problem still recurs. I read somewhere on the net that this is quite a common problem that Nvidia have not got to grips with.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions would be welcome, as the problem is totally ruining my Windows 7 experience, to the point where I'm considering reverting to Vista.

I had the same problem. I removed it and installed an earlier version and have had no issues since.

whoa hold up before you do anything drastic like going back to vista,
check the drivers section on this forum they are always up to date
and are specific to your hdx, cuz the problem you described i havent run into
with the software. it could be a hardware problem loose cable or something but
if you didnt have that problem in vista then its most likely software related.
definately try the driver in the drivers section on this forum

+1 on what VanHalenFanRob wrote. The link to the drivers is here >> forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php

Which version did you use, and where did you get it?

Didn't work - just as bad. I'm getting pissed off with it now.
I am wondering whether a custom install (clean install) would be the way to go. I'm never entirely happy with an upgrade - it's never the same as a clean install and you always seem to get problems.
Has anyone who has done this had any video driver problems like mine?

I didn't even look at the HP driver disk they sent. I clean installed Win 7 Ultimate and then went down the list of drivers on forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php. After installing everything from the top down my laptop wasn't showing any troubleshooting exclamation point on the devices summary page. My video has never had a problem, but I have the 130m card and I ran beta Win 7 for seven months prior to installing the RTM version, I always clean-installed though.

Go to HP's website and download the Vista drivers. These will work fine. I am running the vista driver with no problems. They are windows 7 compatible. The version should be 179.32.

Greg,
Thanks for that. Coincidentally, last night I installed the OEM Vista 64-bit driver (179.04) from the SWSetup folder and so far it seems to be working perfectly.
It seems that this is the answer - looks like all the recent updated Nvidia Win 7 drivers are crap. Either that or they will only work properly with a clean Windows 7 install, i.e. not with an upgrade from Vista.
Thanks again for your input!

I had this problem too with a HDX18T and a 9600M graphics card. - any newer Vista or Windows 7 graphics drivers crash the system with artefacts and BSODs.
Any drivers other than the original install drivers will cause this problem. It doesn't matter if it's Vista or Windows 7.
It's an overheating problem - hardware related and needs to be returned to HP. Otherwise, you can never update the graphics card drivers. It's not Nvidia.
I'm just in the middle of resolving this issue to HP in the UK.

I turned off nVidia PowerMizer in registry. No graphics problem or OS freezes after that. There was no temperature problem on my HDX18, since problem occurs when GPU is idle or not working hard enough. I Installed nVidia system tools (without activating advanced mode) and noticed that graphics problems started when PowerMizer starts to downclock GPU.
I don't remember the name of the four registry keys, but if you google on "disable powermizer" you will find out. Use 2222 value to turn off both when on battery and AC.
I hope nVidia will fix driver for 9600M GT soon, since the fans have to work harder without PowerMizer when GPU is idle. GPU temp reads 44 degrees C right now on my HDX.
I read that early beta driver for Win7 worked too, so it seems to be a problem with the new drivers. The new drivers fail on Vista too. Maybe bug was introduced with the new 130M cards?

I also always use a clean install. Upgrading is not an option for an operating system.
Pro's never ever upgrade, for a reason, to much risk.
Also try safemode remove and deinstall drivers, you know when it is asking
for drivers you're almost good to go. And when it installs automatically, make sure those are microsoft generics.
Rollback is not always working. Keep an eye on release number/version.
Great your solution resolves your issue.
