The MediaSmart touch controls have a lot of potential; however, there are a lot of problems. Here are my problems and fixes. So you don’t need to read through this if you don’t want to change what I have, here is the small list of changes.
1) Removing audio click while changing the volume.
2) Configuring the MediaSmart menu to launch other programs.
3) Configuring iTunes to be controlled by the MediaSmart touch controls.
Now, on to the problems/fixes.
1) The problem.
The annoying clicking sound when changing the volume up or down. It also slows performance.
The fix.
I made silent and very small .wav's to replace the current ones. Now the volume control is silent and smooth. Very nice because you can change the volume while gaming without the crazy stutter and annoying clicks.
2) Navigate to “C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP MediaSmart”
3) Replace the contents of the .RAR, vol.wav and vol3.wav, with the ones at the HP MediaSmart directory.
4) Changes are immediate, no more sounds.
2) The Problem.
MediaSmart menu launches crappy HP programs or Windows default if you have uninstalled the HP bloatware.
The fix.
I will replace the default music icon/link with an iTunes one just so you understand the process.
1) Open the Windows Task Manager and go to the Processes tab.
2) Find SmartMenu.exe and end the process. This allows you to change the icons. Because the icons are technically open, you will not be able to edit them without doing this.
3) Navigate to “C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP MediaSmart\Themes\MediaSmart\Buttons”
5) Save it as “ICON_Music.png”, overwriting the old one.
6) Now, changing it to open iTunes.
7) Navigate to “C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP MediaSmart\Modules\MediaSmart”
8) Open “Music.xml” with Notepad.
9) Change the file path of “<ModuleExecutableFilePath>”, there are 3 of them, to the file location of iTunes, “C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe”
10) It should look like this now…
<ModuleExecutableFilePath1>C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe /ms /maximize</ModuleExecutableFilePath1>
<ModuleExecutableFilePath2>C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe</ModuleExecutableFilePath2>
<ModuleExecutableFilePath3>C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe</ModuleExecutableFilePath3>
11) Save the .xml.
12) Navigate to “C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP MediaSmart” and run SmartMenu.exe.
13) Test it out, click the MediaSmart button and iTunes should be right there, click it and it’ll open.
More Info:
Under the “C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP MediaSmart\Modules\MediaSmart” folder there are several .xml’s. You can copy and paste one, and change the .xml and it will automatically add a new icon to the MediaSmart menu. You can have then have as many programs as you want in that menu.
3) The Problem.
iTunes cannot be controlled by the MediaSmart touch controls, normally.
The Fix.
This fix is awesome and extremely quick. You can use the MediaSmart touch controls whatever you are doing. iTunes does not need to be in focus either. Mine just sits in the taskbar and I can control it very easily.
2) Navigate to “C:\Users\<You>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes Plug-ins\”
3) Make a folder in there of your Windows account name. So if your account name is Bob, you should now have this. ““C:\Users\Bob\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes Plug-ins\Bob”
4) Put “mmKeys.dll” from the download inside that newly created folder.
5) Open iTunes and test it out.
